Our Story – The Exeter Inn

Learn About Our Unique History

Established with a gift from Mrs. William Boyce Thompson and her daughter, Mrs. Anthony J. Drexel Biddle, Jr., The Exeter Inn has upheld a tradition of elegance, grace and hospitality in the center of the Phillips Exeter Academy campus since 1932. Tucked among the Academy’s historic buildings near the charming town of Exeter, NH, our boutique hotel reflects the quiet academic ambiance of the school while assuring the weary traveler a peaceful, relaxing stay.

The original function of The Inn was to host and accommodate visiting dignitaries, families of students and the young ladies who came to visit Academy students. Today, our New Hampshire hotel serves a broader range of clientele with the same hospitality and warmth we showed our very first guests. While The Inn’s beautiful Georgian architecture remains to this day, the property has been updated with all of the modern-day comforts contemporary business and leisure travelers seek.

The Story of the Pineapple

To us, the pineapple etched prominently on our front door represents the symbol of hospitality since the days of early American Colonies. During the colonial era, recently returned sailors would place this exotic fruit on their doorsteps as an announcement of their homecoming, inviting friends and neighbors to visit and accept their hospitality.

This welcoming spirit exists today at our boutique hotel in New Hampshire. Our reputation rests on our attending to every detail - from the perfectly stoked fireplace in the lobby, to the delight and surprise at turn down service and the crisp linens on our dining room tables. You will be delighted to find the facilities, amenities and the professional service you come to expect from premier city center hotels on the seacoast of New Hampshire.

With everything you require carefully arranged by an experienced and attentive staff, The Exeter Inn is the very definition of hospitality.
